Chapter 42
Engr Abul KM Shamsuddin, worked as Senior Mine Environmental Specialist in the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Project-“Feasibility Study for Granite Slab Preparation and Enhancement of Stone Production by Expansion of Maddhapara Mine Project of MGMCL” during 2018-19:
- Engr. Abul KM Shamsuddin, Petroleum & Mining Consultant, worked as Senior Mine Environmental Specialist in the EIA Study under the Project: Feasibility Study for Granite Slab Preparation and Enhancement of Stone Production by Expansion of Maddhapara Mine Project of MGMCL at Parbatipur, Dinajpur, by the Consortium of JOHN T. BOYD COMPANY and MAZUMDER ENTERPRISE during 2018-2019.
- A detail feasibility study for Granite Slab Preparation and Enhancement of Stone Production by Expansion of Maddhapara Hard Rock Mine has been made by John T Boyd & Mazumder Enterprise. Major works cover in the Feasibility Study were Topographical Survey, Seismic Survey, Exploration Drilling, EIA, SIA & EMP.
- Myself, Engr Abul KM Shamsuddin, worked as Senior Mine Environmental Specialist in the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Project-“Feasibility Study for Granite Slab Preparation and Enhancement of Stone Production by Expansion of Maddhapara Mine Project of MGMCL”.
- Draft Feasibility Study Report has been presented by John T Boyd Company before the stakeholders in Petrobangla Auditorium. Energy Secretary, Petrobangla Chairman and Directors, experts from GSB, Dhaka University, Jahangir agar University, BCMCL, MGMCL attended the presentation ceremony. The presentation concluded that the project is technically feasible and economically viable. In this connection, I would like to emphasis that there are huge demands of Maddhapara Hard Rock in the following organizations, as revealed by a Market Study conducted by IIFC (Infrastructure Investment Facilitation Company) in 2013. I, myself, worked as Hard Rock Mine Specialist and Team Leader in the said Market Feasibility Study:
- Bangladesh Railway (BR);
- Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BRA) / Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project;
- Local Govt. and Engineering Department (LGED);
- Roads and Highways Department (R & H);
- Dhaka Mass Transit Company;
- Payara 1320 MW Thermal Power Plant;
- Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project;
- It is my considered opinion that the Ministry of Energy can take up the Project for Implementation. Infra-structure development using Maddhapara Hard Rock in the above projects will boost the economic scenario of Bangladesh. It is noteworthy to state that Maddhapara Hard Rocks are competent, standard and superior quality than that of imported hard rock presently imported from India, Nepal, and Bhutan by the consumers in Bangladesh.
- In this connection, I, Engr Abul KM Shamsuddin, Sr. Environmental Specialist, ENRAC, visited following EIA activities at Maddhapara Hard Rock Mine of MGMCL during 1 – 3 December 2018:
- Meet M. D. of Maddhapara Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL).
- Meet P. D. and Senior Officials of the Study Project.
- In-depth discussion about the status of Feasibility Study and EIA Study of the Project.
- Inspected exploration drilling of well # 6 at new mining area. The well is located in the almost center point of the study area. The new mining area is about 2.0km west-south of present existing mine.
- Visited drilling site of well # 8 – immediate next drilling point – in the new mining area.
- Had a topographical view of the study area.
- In-depth visit to surface installations / skip & cage shafts / different crushers / screens / transportation of rocks and stone of different sizes, store-yard in the existing mine area.
- Discussion with Russian and MGMCL concerned officials about the present mining operations and the mine-environment in the surface and underground.
- Review of the past & present Data and Info from MGMCL.
